Duct tape!

Tomorrow is Open House night at the kids' school, and since Son is in third grade, his class has been working on their mini-economy project, and will have products to "sell" to parents when we visit. They have spent weeks creating a town, naming and designing a currency, electing a mayor and other officials, earning their money by completing homework, and planning their businesses. My son and his best friend made duct tape wallets to sell. Each business has to have a business license and pay for utilities and store-front space out of their profits, so they have completed assignments to help them calculate reasonable prices for their products, and projected earnings based on their inventory. When parents come, they will be given an envelope of the town currency, earned by helping kids with homework, cooking dinner, driving them places, whatever the kids have reported to the "bank" as needing to be paid. Then we get to shop from all the kids' stores.

Two years ago, when my daughter's class did this, there were some really neat products. One girl had made little pillows filled with the stuff you can chill to use as a cold compress, or microwave to use as a heating pad. I bought several of those, and we use them all the time! The duct tape wallets sold out immediately back then, so I'm sure my son's shop will do well this year, too. The girl who made fleece scarves sold out as well, I think. My daughter's product was "bacon and eggs," which is a candy made from pretzel sticks, white almond bark, and yellow m&ms. We were kind of glad she had a few left to bring home, because we love them!

I'm really looking forward to Open House this year. This project makes it a lot more fun than just walking around looking at papers stapled up on bulletin boards.

That is so neat!

There's a guy downtown here that sells duct tape wallets and such as a business. He's been open a couple of years so far, so obviously profitable. :)

what an ambitious school! What does a duct tape wallet look like?

They look just like regular billfolds, with credit card slots and all, but they are made entirely from duct tape. They're pretty cool!

That is an impressive project for a class but it sounds like a lot of fun. I am strangely intruiged by the bacon and eggs. . . You have the three major food groups -- salty, sweet and chocolate!
