Oh, is TODAY Valentine's Day?

Today has seemed very much NOT like the usual Valentine's Day to me, mostly because the kids' school held their Valentine's parties last Friday, which was a late change to the calendar. They had originally been scheduled for today. . . .

This year, I decided my kids should give their classmates something they would actually enjoy, rather than glance at and toss aside, for Valentine's Day. The grocery store had a sale on those heart-shaped Little Debbie cakes, so I bought enough for each kid to get a little two-pack of hearts, and we printed stick-on labels that said, "Happy Valentine's Day from (Kid's Name)." The little dopey cartoon-character-du-jour Valentines from the drug store just don't do anything for me.

I half expected to get some grief from the teacher about giving out junk food, since the whole school has been on a healthy foods kick. The principal even encouraged parents to bring celery and carrot sticks with dip, instead of cupcakes for children's birthday treats! Why take ALL the fun out of childhood?

Last year, Daughter made origami cranes out of pink and red paper for everyone in her class. That was a fun project!

I'd love to hear any other ideas about fun Valentines for kids that get away from the store-bought junk; please post a comment if you have one.
